In this following post, we will be talking about the largest ports in the world, and therefore, the most important. The transportation industry plays a crucial role in the maintenance and development of the global economy. 90% of the global trade transportation is made exclusively in containers, that are directly managed as transshipment goods from one port to another. As a little sneak peek, we can tell you that this ranking is completely dominated by the Southwest Asia. This does not come as a surprise, considering their economic power.
We will show you pictures of “cities within cities”, photos of these impressive ports that will make you understand why they function as the most important logistics flows in the world.
Let’s see which are the largest seaports in the world, from small to large!
Coming at number five, The Port of Busan, in South Korea!
This port is the largest on the Korean peninsula and has an annual traffic of more than 13 million containers… And it’s only in fifth place! This giant has a connection with nothing more and nothing less, than with 500 ports in 100 different countries. In addition, the proximity and contact that this port has with Japan increasingly encourages it to lead the assembly of technology on a global scale.
At number 4 we have… The Port of Hong Kong! In China.
It will surely not surprise you that one of the most enigmatic cities in China is home to one of the largest seaports in the world. As a main characteristic, this port not only transports goods, but also passengers, being one of the busiest ports in the world. It also offers everything you need to dock any type of boat.
Number three is... The Port of Shenzhen! In China.
Although this city might not sound familiar, is a big investment for the Chinese government. The enormous growth potential it has compared to the other ports in the country is the main reason. Even in front of the port of Hong Kong, having surpassed it in volume management for almost 25 million containers per year.
Position number 2 is taken by… The port of Singapore! In Singapore.
It could have perfectly taken the first position, but Shanghai surpassed it in 2010, crowning itself as the largest port in the world. In any case, Singapore is not far behind, it handles more than 32 million containers a year and connects more than 600 ports in 100 different countries. On top of that, it also handles half of the world's oil and petrol. This country is considered one of the safest in the world, so its port not only brings prosperity to Singaporeans who make a living directly from it, but also a big feeling of security.
And finally, number 1 is… The port of Shanghai! In China.
Shanghai is #1 in terms of logistics operations and facility size. In addition to being the great door to the Pacific Ocean, it is located at the confluence of some navigable rivers in several sections (Yangtze, Huangpu and Qiantang). In total, its more than 35 million containers handled per year (almost 100,000 per day) make this port the true king of the list of largest seaports in the world.
It is over 13km long, of which 6,700,000 m2 are reserved exclusively for containers and 156 gantry cranes. And it was also among the first to implement the Chinese regulation, ECA, which tries to reduce the sulfur content of ships.
What are your thoughts of our list of the 5 largest ports in the world? Would you add any others?
It should be noted that since it is such an important sector for the global economy, we just can’t mention all the ports that play an important role in the good transportation industry, some of them as important as the ones we have discussed in this post, such as the Ningbo-Zhoushan port, the Guangzhou port among others. Each one of them makes maritime transport possible and huge amounts of merchandise can be moved from one point of the world to another quickly and efficiently.
